Study Programs

Choosing a Course

The choice of study program is central to the whole process you would be undergoing. You would need to provide a strong justification for the grant of a study visa to Canada through the program chosen. In our experience, the strongest bases would be one’s work history and educational background. A program choice aligned to these two qualifications would provide the strongest reasons for the successful grant of a study visa to Canada.

What are The Conditions for the Issuance of a Canadian Study Permit?

The following are the conditions for the validity of an issued study permit. These conditions need to be observed in order to retain a valid study permit to Canada. The conditions are as follows:

  1. Enrolment and Registration in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  2. Enrolment as either a part-time student or full-time student when studying Quebec;
  3. Authorized leaves allowed are capped at one hundred and fifty (150) days away from the program of study.

It is very important that the individual must know, understand and observe all the terms and conditions included on the issued study permit. Individuals that observe all the terms and conditions of the study permit would have a greater chance of being granted a Post Graduate Work Permit.

Can I Work on a Canadian Study Permit?

One of the most attractive reasons to study in Canada is the grant of authority to work while studying. This helps in paying for tuition, accommodations and other expenses. While studying full-time, an international student is allowed to work for at most twenty (20) hours per week. When school is on break, the number of hours allowed increases to forty (40) hours per week.

When on study permit to Canada, there is no need to obtain a work permit to be gainfully employed, regardless if they work on-campus or off-campus. The study visa would provide the parameters of the allowed work for an international student while in Canada. If the study program includes work experience for acceptance, the international student would be allowed to work more than twenty (20) hours during the semester. This benefit would be indicated in the letter of acceptance, alongside a work permit and a study permit. This issued work permit would only allow the student to work on campus during the semester.

Can I Include My Family on my Study Permit?

For students who are married and/or have children, an added benefit of bringing their family in country during their study time is provided. Canadian immigration officers would consider the inclusion of immediate family members with an individual’s study permit application. The inclusion of the family may affect the overall review of the study visa application.

When bringing family members using a study permit to Canada, the applicant’s spouse may become eligible for the grant of a work permit. This work permit would allow the visa holder’s spouse to work full-time in Canada during the duration of the study period.

Post-Graduation Visa Options After Graduation

Canada provides many post-graduation options for individuals who were granted an initial study permit. One of the options available is through what is known as the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).

The Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) allows study visa beneficiaries to remain in country for a period of up to three years after graduation. If you meet the requirements,  within that period is the availability of permanent residency for individuals who have been gainfully employed for one (1) full year after graduation from a study visa program.

In order to be granted a PGWP, the visa holder would need to prove that they abided by all of there study permit conditions. This includes proof that the main activity of the visa holder during their stay in the country was to study and complete the program of study indicated in the visa granted. Once granted, the PGWP duration would be the same as the length of period provided in the original study visa.

Aside from working, there is also another option of further study in Canada. This program is called the Post-Graduate Study Permit and is often granted to international students who have completed a program of study from an accredited Canadian educational institution. This program would also allow the visa holder to work full time while studying for their post-graduate degree.

A PGWP’s term of validity may range from eight months to three years. This is one of the best ways to gain work experience in Canada, which is essential when seeking to obtain Canadian permanent residency status. A PGWP does not require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) in the grant of the work permit. Once a PGWP is granted, the following are but some of the ways one can obtain permanent residency in Canada:

9
Canadian Experience Class (CEC);
9
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW);
9
Federal Skilled Trades (FST);
9
Provincial Nomination Programs (PNP);
9
Quebec Immigration Programme;
